Jamey, Guppy grass is a fast growing virtually rootless plant that doesn’t float but sinks to the bottom. We find it to be an excellent plant for fry to seek refuge in and is great for egg scattering fish.

ITIS.gov lists four valid sub-species of Najas guadalupensis found across the Gulf coast states. So, yours is probably one of those.
