Flame Tuxedo Variatus
Description
The Flame Tuxedo Variatus is a North American livebearer related to and in the same genus, Xiphophorus, as the swordtails. Most commercial strains of platies have mixed heritage, including ancestors from X. hellerii, X. maculatus, and X. variatus. This fish is largely descended from X. variatus. Males often reach 4cm (1.5 in.). Females are somewhat larger and much heavier. Males have orange bodies and tails, yellow dorsals, and a black tuxedo body pattern. Females show the same coloration but are more subdued in hue. This fish has no natural range, but of its ancestors hail from Mexico and Central America. This fish originated in 2004 from our Orange Tuxedo Plumetail Variatus. This color strain breeds true for color and pattern, although it takes continuous selection to maintain a proper ratio of tuxedo and orange in the body.
