The photo is of a young (about 3.5 – 4 months old) male Skyblue OB Peacock Cichlid.
This is a domestic (commercial) strain we developed around 2005 from a couple of males that appeared in our Gold OB Peacocks. I gave those two males about 40 Gold OB females. I then mated the resulting females back to their fathers to set the strain. The female Skyblue OBs are gold, very similar to our Gold OB females. After a few generations of selection for the skyblue coloration, this strain breeds mostly true. Any off color males are Gold OBs.
Our Gold OBs and Orange OBs still throw a few Skyblue OBs each breeding cycle, indicating that the skyblue color is recessive to gold. Our Orange OBs are simply Gold OBs selected for the spread of orange from the fins into the body.
We’ve recently begun breeding Dragon Blood Peacocks, and some of those males show blue iridescence. I’m going to give one of those males some Skyblue OB females just to see what will result
