April 2015 Photo Contest

Photo: Female hifin lyretail redwag sword

In our April 2015 newsletter we ran a photo contest (refer to the photo above). Here’s what the contest stated:

“The winner of this photo contest will be the first to correctly identify the two dominant fin genes expressed by the female redwag swordtail pictured below. English is sufficient; it’s not necessary to provide the genetic codes. To enter the contest, please go to http://goliadfarms.com/contact-us/ and fill out the form, placing “photo contest” in the message.

The winner will receive a two pound bag of Simple Pet Products’ #100 Grind fish food. This is the 50% protein food we feed all our fish under two inches in length.”

The winner, less than an hour after the newsletter posted, was Scott Davis of Park Forest, Illinois. His prize has shipped.

Here is Scott’s answer, “The swordtail in the “photo contest” image shows dominant high fin and lyretail.”

There were other correct answers that came in later, including a very comprehensive analysis or other genes this fish displayed, but Scott was first.

If you wish to participate in future photo contests, participate in a separate email contest, and receive subscriber discounts, please go to http://goliadfarms.com/blog/ to enroll.

Good fish-keeping,

Charles
