Gambusia Road Trip – Day Minus 1

Gambusia Road Trip – Day Minus 1

Somehow, although I’d had a couple of weeks to plan the trip, suddenly it was the day before the scheduled departure at 6:00 a.m. the next morning (the time Susie wanted us gone). I’d not gotten anything ready. Cara had arrived and was ready. I jumped into action.

First order of business was checking out our pop-up camper, which has been idle since summer. I expected no problems. Wrong. The battery was dead. The hitch on the Suburban was too high for the camper tongue (we usually pulled it with the pickup with its drop hitch). The Suburban needed an oil change before we could leave. And, a dozen other problems, such as I hadn’t packed and hadn’t gotten dog supplies together. I blame Susie.

I spent most of the afternoon and into the evening getting the Suburban and camper ready. As a result, our departure was delayed because I hadn’t finished some greenhouse tasks that had to be done before I could go.

We were taking the Suburban rather than the pickup to allow the four big dogs more room. The pickup’s extend cab would have been too cramped. With the middle seat down and the back seat out, the dogs would have plenty of room for their beds and space to move around. We’d be driving lots of miles each day and the dogs needed some personal space lest they get testy with each other.

Susie really should have stepped up and planned the trip. Next blog: “Gambusia Road Trip – Day 1”
